PlayStation repair for every generation, PS1 to PS5 Pro

PlayStation repair across the UK: thirty years of Sony hardware

Three decades of PlayStation have given the world some genuinely historic machines — the original console that brought 3D gaming to a generation, the PS2 that remains the best-selling console ever made, and today’s PS5, the most advanced home gaming hardware Sony has produced. Every one of them, and everything in between, is repaired at CrC Repair® (trading as Pocket Geek) across our ten UK branches.

PS5 disc drives, PS4 HDMI ports, the PS3’s infamous Yellow Light of Death, PS2 disc read errors, PSP screens, Vita batteries — the whole spectrum of PlayStation faults passes across our benches. Repairs carry a one-year warranty, except soldering work such as YLoD, which has three months. Selected branches also buy and sell pre-owned PlayStation consoles, and any console we sell is backed for two years. This page sits within our wider console repair service, which covers Xbox and Nintendo as well.

PlayStation faults we fix, generation by generation

HDMI port repair

Light on, fans spinning, system apparently alive — yet the TV shows nothing. That combination points at the HDMI port more often than anything else, a famously fragile spot on the PS4 in particular and far from unknown on the PS5. Ports are replaced on all PlayStation home consoles, restoring full-resolution output, with a year’s cover.

Disc drive repair & replacement

Discs refused at the slot, games unread once loaded, grinding and clicking mid-spin, or a disc held hostage inside — all repairable across the PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5. On the PS5, replacement involves Sony’s drive-pairing process, and exactly what that means for your console is explained before anything is agreed. Covered for twelve months.

Overheating & fan cleaning

Shutdowns mid-session, heat warnings on screen, a fan howling at full tilt: a decade’s dust does that to a PS4, and the PS5’s cleverer cooling isn’t immune with time. The console is opened up, heatsink and fan assembly cleaned out entirely, processor thermal paste renewed, and quiet, stable running restored, with twelve months’ cover on the work.

PS4 Blue Light of Death

The indicator pulses blue, never settles to white, and the PS4 refuses to finish booting. Behind that single symptom can sit a dead hard drive, damaged system software, a memory problem or a motherboard fault — which is why BLoD work starts with proper diagnosis, and you hear the honest findings and options before a single step further. The repair is covered for one year.

PS3 Yellow Light of Death

Yellow indicator, rapid red flashing, a console that can’t recover: the PS3’s signature failure, usually rooted in solder joints around the GPU or CPU broken down by years of thermal stress. Board-level repair via reflow and reball is available — the section further down explains both. Our cover on that soldering is three months, or whatever period your quote gives.

Won’t turn on: power fault repair

A console that ignores the power button, a flicker of life that dies instantly, a beep and then nothing, or frozen on the startup screen — power faults have many roots: a failed PSU, corrupted system software, a logic board issue. Thorough diagnostics find the actual cause first; the right repair follows, with twelve months of cover.

DualSense & DualShock controller repair

An analogue stick registering movement nobody made — stick drift — affects DualShock 4 pads as much as DualSense ones, and the affected stick components are repaired or replaced to bring precision back. Also covered: sticky or dead face buttons and d-pads, worn L2/R2 triggers, DualSense adaptive-trigger faults losing their resistance, controller charging ports (USB-C and micro USB), DualSense speakers and microphones, thumbstick caps, and the DualShock 4 headphone jack, all with a one-year guarantee.

Console storage: HDD & SSD swaps and upgrades

Slow, failing or simply full storage drags the whole experience down. PS4s take an SSD in place of the stock hard drive for markedly faster loading; PS5s take an M.2 SSD in the expansion slot for extra capacity; failing drives across the range are replaced. Moving your data across and reinstalling the system software are included, and the job is covered for a year.

USB port & eject mechanism faults

Broken USB ports — the ones charging your controllers and taking your accessories — are repaired and replaced across the range. So is the PS4’s notorious phantom-eject behaviour: discs spat out unprompted, or an eject button that’s stopped listening, again with a year’s cover.

PSP & PS Vita screen repair

Cracked, damaged or dead handheld screens top the PSP and Vita repair list. We source good-quality panels for every supported PSP and Vita and fit them carefully; the repair is guaranteed for a year.

PSP & PS Vita battery replacement

Handheld batteries fade hard with years and charge cycles. When a PSP or Vita can no longer hold meaningful charge, a fresh battery brings proper playtime back, backed by twelve months of cover.

Software faults, error codes & reinstalls

Damaged system software, error codes that keep returning, trouble connecting to PSN, endless database rebuilds, updates that never finish, safe mode that won’t let go — resolved regularly across every PlayStation generation, with full system reinstallation where needed and backup discussed with you first, plus a one-year warranty on the fix.

The PS4 HDMI port: the PlayStation repair we see most

One fault earns its own section, purely on volume. The PS4’s HDMI port is a widely recognised structural weak point: mounted straight onto the motherboard, its connector pins fragile enough that a cable inserted at a slight angle — or snagged in passing — can bend pins or kill the port outright.

The classic presentation: a PS4 behaving perfectly by ear — fans, beep, light — while the TV stays stubbornly blank. Usually we can fit a new port and get the picture back on the day. If a different repairer has blamed the motherboard purely because there’s no video, it is genuinely worth a second opinion here first: far more often than not, the port is the culprit, not the board.

PS3 Yellow Light of Death: reflow and reball explained

The Yellow Light of Death occupies the same place in PlayStation lore as the Red Ring of Death does for the Xbox 360 — a widespread generational failure, born of thermal stress gradually breaking down the solder joints tying the GPU and CPU to the motherboard.

There are two board-level fixes. Reflowing heats the joints in a controlled way so the existing solder melts and reconnects. Reballing goes further: the affected chip comes off entirely, its solder ball array is rebuilt with new material, and the chip is reinstalled. Either can bring a YLoD console back — though outcomes depend on the board’s condition and how far the damage has spread, and you get a realistic, honest picture of the prospects for your particular PS3 before anything is agreed. We guarantee reflow and reball jobs for three months, unless a different term is agreed on the quote.

Buy and sell PlayStation consoles at selected branches

Upgrading to a PS5, letting go of a console gathering dust, or hunting a fairly priced pre-owned machine — selected branches trade PS3, PS4 and PS5 consoles in both directions. Ask your nearest store whether it does, browse pre-owned consoles in our store or see how to sell your PlayStation to us.

Two-year warranty

Buy a pre-owned PlayStation

Every pre-owned console on our shelves has been through full testing and inspection by our technicians before going on sale — and every one leaves with two years of warranty attached, far more protection than a private sale offers. If a fault shows up in that time, we repair or replace the console.

Fair offers

Sell your PlayStation to us

Bring a working PS3, PS4 or PS5 to a participating branch — with or without controllers and accessories — and the team will check it over and make you a fair offer. Walk in whenever, or get in touch ahead of time to talk it through.

PlayStation repair cost and pricing

A clear quote opens every PlayStation repair — confirmed with you before work begins, free of hidden charges, with nothing bolted on when you collect. What it comes to depends on the console generation and the fault. Your nearest branch will quote on the spot, or the online booking tool gives a fast estimate.

PlayStation repair FAQs

How long does a PlayStation repair take?

HDMI ports, fan cleaning and controller repairs — the everyday PlayStation work — are usually finished inside a day. YLoD board repairs and logic board diagnostics take longer by nature, and the timeframe quoted at drop-off is a realistic one.

Do I need to book a PlayStation repair in advance?

No — bring the console into any branch whenever suits you. Online booking exists for anyone who’d rather have a set slot waiting.

Why does my PlayStation turn on with no display output?

The HDMI port is the culprit in the overwhelming majority of these cases. Take the PlayStation to your nearest branch: diagnosis and port replacement typically happen within the day.

What is the Blue Light of Death on PS4 and can you fix it?

A BLoD PS4 powers on with a pulsating blue light that never turns white, and the console fails to finish starting up. Possible causes range from hard drive failure and corrupted system software to RAM or logic board faults — our technicians diagnose which, and you get an honest assessment before any work begins.

Can you repair the PS3 Yellow Light of Death?

Yes — using reflow and reball soldering techniques, with the prospects for your particular console assessed honestly upfront. As soldering work, a YLoD repair comes with three months’ cover, unless your quote says differently.

Can you fix PS5 disc drive issues?

Yes. PS5 disc drive replacement involves a drive-pairing process specific to Sony’s system, and the team explains the full process for your console before anything goes ahead.

Do you buy and sell PlayStation consoles?

Yes, at selected branches — ask your nearest store first. Every console we sell has been fully tested and has a two-year warranty, and if you’re selling, a participating branch will make you an offer there and then.

What warranty do pre-owned PlayStation consoles come with?

Two years from purchase, on every pre-owned console we sell. If something goes wrong during that time, we repair or replace it.

Can you fix DualSense stick drift and adaptive trigger faults?

Yes. We see both constantly. The affected components are repaired or replaced to bring full functionality back, covered by the one-year warranty.

Is my data safe during a PlayStation repair?

Most hardware repairs leave saves and account data untouched. Where storage or system software is involved, backing up beforehand is the sensible move — and it’s discussed with you before that kind of work starts.

What warranty do I get with a PlayStation repair?

Every PlayStation repair carries a year of cover — HDMI ports, disc drives, fan cleaning, controllers and storage upgrades included — apart from YLoD soldering, which carries three months unless quoted otherwise. Knocks or spills after we hand it back are not included; the warranty page has the full terms.

Do you repair retro PlayStation consoles like the PS2 and PS1?

Yes — PS2 disc read errors, PS1 and PSone faults, and the handhelds too. Where parts remain available, age is no barrier; the machines that started it all deserve fixing as much as the newest.
