PlayStation repair for every generation — and consoles bought & sold
PlayStation repair across the UK: thirty years of Sony hardware
Three decades of PlayStation have given the world some genuinely historic machines — the original console that brought 3D gaming to a generation, the PS2 that remains the best-selling console ever made, and today’s PS5, the most advanced home gaming hardware Sony has produced. Every one of them, and everything in between, is repaired at CrC Repair® (trading as Pocket Geek) across our ten UK branches.
PS5 disc drives, PS4 HDMI ports, the PS3’s infamous Yellow Light of Death, PS2 disc read errors, PSP screens, Vita batteries — the whole spectrum of PlayStation faults passes across our benches, and every repair carries a one-year warranty. There’s a second string too: we buy and sell pre-owned PlayStation consoles, with every console we sell backed by a two-year warranty. This page sits within our wider console repair service, which covers Xbox and Nintendo as well.

PlayStation faults we fix, generation by generation
HDMI port repair
Light on, fans spinning, system apparently alive — yet the TV shows nothing. That combination points at the HDMI port more often than anything else, a famously fragile spot on the PS4 in particular and far from unknown on the PS5. Ports are replaced on all PlayStation home consoles, restoring full-resolution output. One-year warranty.
Disc drive repair & replacement
Discs refused at the slot, games unread once loaded, grinding and clicking mid-spin, or a disc held hostage inside — all repairable on PS5, PS4, PS3 and PS2. On the PS5, replacement involves Sony’s drive-pairing process, and exactly what that means for your console is explained before anything is agreed. One-year warranty.
Overheating & fan cleaning
Shutdowns mid-session, heat warnings on screen, a fan howling at full tilt: a decade’s dust does that to a PS4, and the PS5’s cleverer cooling isn’t immune with time. The console is opened up, heatsink and fan assembly cleaned out entirely, processor thermal paste renewed, and quiet, stable running restored. One-year warranty.
PS4 Blue Light of Death
The indicator pulses blue, never settles to white, and the PS4 refuses to finish booting. Behind that single symptom can sit a failed hard drive, corrupted system software, RAM trouble or a logic board fault — which is why BLoD work starts with proper diagnosis, and you hear the honest findings and options before a single step further. One-year warranty.
PS3 Yellow Light of Death
Yellow indicator, rapid red flashing, a console that can’t recover: the PS3’s signature failure, usually rooted in solder joints around the GPU or CPU broken down by years of thermal stress. Board-level repair via reflow and reball is available — the deep-dive section below explains both. One-year warranty.
Won’t turn on: power fault repair
Dead to the button, alive for a second then off again, beeping before shutdown, or frozen on the startup screen — power faults have many roots: a failed PSU, corrupted system software, a logic board issue. Thorough diagnostics find the actual cause first; the right repair follows. One-year warranty.
DualSense & DualShock controller repair
An analogue stick registering movement nobody made — stick drift — plagues DualSense and DualShock 4 alike, and the affected stick components are repaired or replaced to bring precision back. Also covered: sticky or dead face buttons and d-pads, worn L2/R2 triggers, DualSense adaptive-trigger faults losing their resistance, controller charging ports (USB-C and micro USB), DualSense speakers and microphones, thumbstick caps, and the DualShock 4 headphone jack. One-year warranty.
Console storage: HDD & SSD swaps and upgrades
Slow, failing or simply full storage drags the whole experience down. PS4s take an SSD in place of the stock hard drive for markedly faster loading; PS5s take an M.2 SSD in the expansion slot for extra capacity; failing drives across the range are replaced. Data migration and system software reinstallation come as part of the job. One-year warranty.
USB port & eject mechanism faults
Broken USB ports — the ones charging your controllers and taking your accessories — are repaired and replaced across the range. So is the PS4’s notorious phantom-eject behaviour: discs spat out unprompted, or an eject button that’s stopped listening. One-year warranty.
PSP & PS Vita screen repair
Cracked, damaged or dead handheld screens top the PSP and Vita repair list. Quality replacement panels are sourced for all supported PSP and Vita models and fitted to a professional standard. One-year warranty.
PSP & PS Vita battery replacement
Handheld batteries fade hard with years and charge cycles. When a PSP or Vita can no longer hold meaningful charge, a fresh battery brings proper playtime back. One-year warranty.
Software faults, error codes & reinstalls
Corrupted system software, stubborn error codes, PSN connection failures, database rebuild loops, updates that never finish, safe mode that won’t let go — resolved regularly across every PlayStation generation, with full system reinstallation where needed and backup discussed with you first. One-year warranty.
The PS4 HDMI port: the PlayStation repair we see most
One fault earns its own section, purely on volume. The PS4’s HDMI port is a widely recognised structural weak point: mounted straight onto the motherboard, its connector pins fragile enough that a cable inserted at a slight angle — or snagged in passing — can bend pins or kill the port outright.
The classic presentation: a PS4 behaving perfectly by ear — fans, beep, light — while the TV stays stubbornly blank. In most cases the port is replaced and full video output restored the same day. And if another shop has diagnosed a motherboard fault from the video failure alone, it is genuinely worth a second opinion here first: far more often than not, the port is the culprit, not the board.
PS3 Yellow Light of Death: reflow and reball explained
The Yellow Light of Death occupies the same place in PlayStation lore as the Red Ring of Death does for the Xbox 360 — a widespread generational failure, born of thermal stress gradually breaking down the solder joints tying the GPU and CPU to the motherboard.
Two board-level techniques address it. Reflowing applies controlled heat to soften and re-establish the existing solder connections. Reballing goes further: the affected chip comes off entirely, its solder ball array is rebuilt with new material, and the chip is reinstalled. Either can bring a YLoD console back — though outcomes depend on the board’s condition and how far the damage has spread, and you get a realistic, honest picture of the prospects for your particular PS3 before anything is agreed.
